Berlinale 2026: Golden Bear on the Horizon

The 76th Berlin International Film Festival is entering its climactic final days, with the prestigious Golden Bear ceremony set for Friday, February 21. The festival, running from February 12-22, has showcased 22 films in its main competition, with jury president Wim Wenders leading the deliberations alongside six international jurors.

This year's Berlinale has been marked by both artistic ambition and political controversy. The opening ceremony was dominated by protests, and Wenders' statement that the jury "has to stay out of politics" sparked heated debate, leading to the withdrawal of two restored films and writer Arundhati Roy from a planned appearance.

Among the competition highlights, Karim Aïnouz's star-studded Rosebush Pruning — featuring Callum Turner, Riley Keough, Jamie Bell, Elle Fanning, and Pamela Anderson — has generated significant buzz, as has Kornél Mundruczó's At the Sea, starring Amy Adams. Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh was honoured with the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement, wiping away tears during her acceptance speech.

BAFTA 2026: Anderson vs. Coogler

All eyes now turn to London, where the 79th BAFTA Film Awards will be held on Sunday, February 22, at the Royal Festival Hall. The ceremony, hosted by Alan Cumming, could prove pivotal in shaping the final stretch of the Oscar race.

Paul Thomas Anderson's political satire One Battle After Another leads the field with 14 nominations, while Ryan Coogler's historical horror Sinners follows closely with 13 — the highest nomination count for any film by a Black director in BAFTA history. Both films are competing for Best Film alongside Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value.

The presenter lineup reads like a Hollywood who's who: Bryan Cranston, Cillian Murphy, Michael B. Jordan, and Kate Hudson are among the confirmed A-list presenters, while Jessie Ware will perform during the ceremony broadcast live on BBC One.

The Road to the Oscars

This weekend's double-header of Berlinale and BAFTA carries special weight for the upcoming Academy Awards. The BAFTAs have historically been a strong predictor of Oscar outcomes, and this year's ceremony introduces a new element: the Best Achievement in Casting category, making the 2026 Oscars a historic milestone.

With Sinners already holding a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, the BAFTA results could either cement its frontrunner status or open the door for Anderson's One Battle After Another to mount a late surge. Industry analysts note that while Coogler's film dominates in nomination counts, Anderson's political satire may have the edge in several key craft categories.

The 2026 awards season has been one of the most competitive in years, with no clear consensus pick — a rarity that has kept audiences and industry insiders guessing right up to the final stretch.
