Shiffrin's Redemption: Slalom Gold After 12 Years

Mikaela Shiffrin delivered one of the defining performances of the Milano Cortina Games on Day 12, winning the women's slalom by a staggering 1.50 seconds — the largest margin of victory in Olympic alpine skiing since Nagano 1998. At 30, she became the oldest American woman to win Olympic slalom gold, reclaiming the title she first won as an 18-year-old at the 2014 Sochi Games.

The victory was especially meaningful after years of Olympic heartbreak. Shiffrin had failed to finish in both the slalom and giant slalom at Beijing 2022, and the intervening years tested her resolve. "I just said, stop dreaming, just ski," she told reporters after the race. Her decisive two-run performance silenced any remaining doubts about her standing as the greatest slalom skier of her generation.

Klaebo Joins Phelps in the 10-Gold Club

Norway's Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo captured gold in the men's team sprint alongside his partner, bringing his career Olympic gold medal tally to a remarkable 10. The achievement places Klaebo alongside swimming legend Michael Phelps as the only Olympians in history — summer or winter — to reach double-digit individual and team golds.

At just 29 years old, Klaebo already owns the most Winter Olympic gold medals of any cross-country skier in history. Norway's dominance continued to anchor the overall medal table, where they lead with 33 total medals heading into the final days of competition.

Hockey Quarterfinals: Overtime Drama

The men's ice hockey quarterfinals delivered two nail-biting overtime finishes. The United States edged Sweden 2-1 after defenceman Quinn Hughes scored the overtime winner, sending the Americans into the semifinals. In the other match, Canada rallied from a late deficit to beat Czechia 3-2, with Mitch Marner's backhander in overtime completing the comeback.

Both results set up blockbuster semifinal matchups as the hockey tournament enters its climactic phase. On the women's side, the USA crushed Sweden 5-0 to advance to a fifth consecutive Olympic final, where they will once again face Canada in a renewal of hockey's greatest rivalry.

Su Yiming's Birthday Gold and Other Highlights

China's Su Yiming celebrated his 22nd birthday by winning gold in men's slopestyle snowboarding, adding to his growing Olympic collection that now includes four medals across two Games. Japan's Mari Fukada took the women's slopestyle title, while New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski-Synnott earned her fifth career Olympic medal — the most by any snowboarder in history.

In figure skating, the women's short program set up a three-way battle for gold: Japan's Ami Nakai leads by the slimmest of margins over compatriot Kaori Sakamoto, with American Alysa Liu just 2.3 points behind in third. The free skate on February 19 promises to be one of the most anticipated events of the entire Games.

Medal Count: Norway Pulls Away

With just four days of competition remaining, Norway leads the medal table with 33 medals, on track to become the first nation in 20 years to top the standings at three consecutive Winter Olympics. Host nation Italy sits second with 26 medals — already its most successful Winter Games ever — while the United States holds third place with 24 medals (7 gold, 11 silver, 6 bronze).
