Champions League Final Looms for Budapest: Round of 16 Second Legs on March 17

A Decisive Night in European Football

March 17 marks another round in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League Round of 16: Arsenal hosts Bayer Leverkusen at the Emirates Stadium, while Chelsea clashes with Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge. The outcome of both second legs will directly influence who reaches the quarter-finals — and thus gets closer to the Budapest final.

Arsenal–Leverkusen: Both Teams Have a Chance

The first leg in Leverkusen ended in a 1–1 draw: Kai Havertz equalized in extra time against his former team, so Arsenal can secure qualification at home in an open match. Xabi Alonso's team has been consistently performing well in Europe this season, but Arsenal has one of the strongest home records on the continent at the Emirates Stadium. The outcome of the tie could remain uncertain until the very last moment.

Chelsea–PSG: A Steep Climb After Defeat in Paris

Chelsea faces a much tougher task: PSG won the first leg 5–2 in Paris, so the London team would need to win by at least four goals at Stamford Bridge in normal time to qualify. The statistics clearly favor the French side, but surprises can never be ruled out in the Champions League — and London fans have not yet given up hope.

Real Madrid Also Seeking Revenge After Valverde's Hat-Trick

Real Madrid and Manchester City played out the most dramatic first leg: Federico Valverde scored three times in the first half, and the Madrid team eventually won 3–0. The Uruguayan midfielder thus became the first Uruguayan footballer to score a hat-trick in a Champions League match — all this in the absence of the injured Mbappe, Bellingham, and Rodrygo. The second leg will be held at the Etihad Stadium, where City will need something close to a miracle.

Budapest Prepares for Historic Final

While the teams on the pitch decide who will reach the final, the venue — the Puskás Aréna in Budapest — is already preparing for the final on May 30. This will be the first time that Hungary has hosted the Champions League final: the stadium can accommodate 67,215 spectators and is located just one kilometer from the Keleti railway station and two kilometers from the historic city center.

The economic impact will also be significant. The previous Champions League final in Munich generated $57 million in revenue for the city in a single weekend — experts expect a similar, or even higher, amount in Budapest. Hotels, restaurants, and tourism businesses are already reporting increased bookings.

A free Champions Festival awaits fans on Heroes' Square between May 28 and 31: concerts, interactive programs, and DJ nights will make the days memorable. Tickets are available from €70, with 39,000 of the 61,400 seats being allocated through public sale — interested parties could register until March 19.

UEFA is also introducing an important innovation: the final will start not at the usual 9:00 PM, but at 6:00 PM, allowing fans to fully enjoy Budapest's nightlife after the match — which could give the city a further economic boost.

Budapest's Name Will Be Written into Sporting History

The second legs of the Round of 16 will show which teams will be able to fight for the trophy at the Puskás Aréna. Whoever takes to the field on May 30, the event will write Budapest's name into European sporting history for a long time to come — Hungary is getting its biggest football stage yet.
