Colombia vs. Cuba: Caribbean Showdown at the 2026 Classic

The Caribbean as Epicenter of World Baseball

The Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is experiencing one of its most intense days this Sunday, March 8, since hosting the 2026 World Baseball Classic. In Pool A, Colombia and Cuba star in the match with the most history and symbolism in the group stage: two nations where baseball is not simply a sport, but part of the cultural and identity fabric of their people.

Cuba Arrives with Authority; Colombia Seeks its First Victory

Cuba started the tournament strong. In their debut on Friday, March 6, they defeated Panama 3-1 thanks to home runs from Yoelkis Guibert—who opened the scoring in the second inning—and third baseman Yoán Moncada, a prominent figure for the Los Angeles Angels in Major League Baseball and the only MLB star in the Cuban team's starting lineup. Moncada's performance, both at bat and in the field, was the dominant note of that first encounter, according to ESPN Deportes.

Colombia, meanwhile, comes to this match with the urgent need to add points. The Colombians lost to Puerto Rico 5-0 in the opening game—an inning of five runs in the fifth inning conditioned the score—and then fell 8-2 to Canada, with batter Owen Caissie as the protagonist of the North American victory. With a 0-2 record, Colombia is playing for much more than three points: they are playing to keep their participation in the tournament alive.

The Key Players on Each Side

The Colombian team has a mix of Major League experience and emerging talent. Veterans such as pitcher José Quintana, also pitcher Julio Teherán, infielder Donovan Solano, and third baseman Gio Urshela lead the squad, along with catcher Jorge Alfaro. This is Colombia's third participation in the Classic, after their appearances in 2017 and 2023, and the team seeks to consolidate itself as a rising power in Latin American baseball, according to Infobae.

Cuba, on the other hand, relies on a roster that mixes players from the Cuban national league with elements that compete abroad. In addition to Moncada, left-handed pitcher Liván Moinelo and reliever Raidel Martínez are key pieces of the pitching staff, according to the Olympics.com portal. The island has qualified for the quarterfinals in all five previous editions of the Classic; defending that record is their stated goal.

A Full Day for Latin American Baseball

Sunday does not end with Colombia-Cuba. Also in Pool A, Panama and Canada face each other in the search for points that will define the qualified teams. In Pool D, played in the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands faces the host Dominican Republic, in another high-voltage clash. The day makes this Sunday one of the richest days of the tournament in terms of Latin American baseball.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic takes place with venues in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Japan, and the United States, with an expanded format that gives greater prominence to Latin American and Asian teams. The group stage extends until March 11, when the best teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals.

More Than a Game

For Colombian and Cuban fans, Sunday's duel transcends tactics and partial results. It is a meeting between two baseball traditions with decades of history, between a Cuba that has forged world champions and a Colombia that grows year after year on the international circuit. Whatever the final score, Latin American baseball wins.
