Why Users Loved GPT-4o — and Why That Was the Problem

OpenAI now faces at least eight lawsuits alleging that GPT-4o's overly validating responses contributed to suicides and mental health crises. The Social Media Victims Law Center has accused ChatGPT of "emotional manipulation" and acting as a "suicide coach." According to reports, OpenAI flagged 1.2 million users exhibiting signals of suicidal intent or AI-induced psychosis while GPT-4o was active.
The replacement model, GPT-5.2, reportedly reduces harmful responses by up to 52% compared to GPT-4o-era benchmarks. But critics note that its additional safety guardrails come at the cost of the conversational warmth users valued, with some describing the newer model's tone as "clinical" and "preachy."
