Scorsese Films with DiCaprio and Lawrence in the Czech Republic
Martin Scorsese is filming the gothic psychological thriller "What Happens at Night" in the Czech Republic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Filming is taking place in Prague, near Kolín, and in Úštěk.
Hollywood Comes to Bohemia
Legendary American director Martin Scorsese is currently filming his new film, What Happens at Night, in the Czech Republic. The leading roles are played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, joined by Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris. It's a gothic psychological thriller based on Peter Cameron's novel, adapted by screenwriter Patrick Marber.
The story follows an American married couple who arrive in a small, snowy European town to adopt a child. In a vast, almost deserted hotel, they encounter strange characters—an extravagant chanteuse, a corrupt businessman, and a charismatic healer. Reality gradually crumbles, and nothing is as it seems.
Filming Across the Czech Republic
Principal photography in the Czech Republic began on February 24, 2026. The first scene was shot at the W Prague hotel (formerly Grand Hotel Europa) on Wenceslas Square in Prague. The production subsequently moved to Kotěra Castle in Ratboř near Kolín, about sixty kilometers east of Prague.
In mid-March, the crew headed to Úštěk in northern Bohemia, a town famous for its well-preserved historical architecture. Filming took place on Mírové náměstí (Peace Square), in Panský dvůr (Manor Courtyard), and in a section of 1. máje Street. To achieve the desired winter look, the filmmakers covered the town center with artificial snow.
According to Úštěk Mayor Ondřej Elísek, they primarily filmed arrival and departure shots intended for the film's opening and closing. Úštěk is no stranger to Hollywood productions—Taika Waititi filmed his award-winning film Jojo Rabbit there in 2019.
The director of photography is the acclaimed Rodrigo Prieto, a long-time Scorsese collaborator. The film is produced by Apple Studios and Studiocanal through Scorsese's company, Sikelia Productions.
Czech Republic as a Film Powerhouse
The arrival of a production of Scorsese's caliber confirms the Czech Republic's position as one of the most attractive film hubs in Europe. The country offers experienced crews, diverse architecture, and competitive costs compared to Hollywood.
Furthermore, the Czech Republic has significantly strengthened its incentive program since 2026. The main rate of film incentives has increased from 20% to 25% of eligible costs, and the cap per project has tripled to approximately $19 million. A 35% incentive is even available for animated and digital projects. The program's total annual budget reaches approximately 87 million euros.
These changes aim to attract even more international productions and support the local film industry, which employs thousands of people and brings contracts to small and medium-sized enterprises across the country.
Premiere in 2027
The film What Happens at Night represents Scorsese's sixth collaboration with DiCaprio, following films such as Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon. For Jennifer Lawrence, on the other hand, it is her first project with this director. The premiere is expected next year.
