A Historic Chance After 16 Years

The Slovak national football team faces its most important match in recent years. On Thursday, March 26, at 8:45 PM, they will meet Kosovo at Bratislava's Tehelné pole stadium in the semi-final of the European Playoff Path C for a place at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. This is a historic opportunity for Slovak football — the last time they qualified for the World Cup was in 2010 in South Africa, where they sensationally defeated Italy 3:2 in the round of 16.

Weakened Sides on Both Sides

Coach Francesco Calzona has nominated 27 players for the playoff, including key names like Milan Škriniar and Stanislav Lobotka. However, their participation is questionable. Škriniar is struggling with a torn muscle fiber in his adductor area and, according to Calzona, would like to play at least one of the matches. Lobotka had problems with his thigh for almost three weeks, but according to the coach, he has been training with the team for two days. The positive news is the return of defender Martin Valjent, who received a call-up after two and a half years.

Kosovo is in an even worse situation with absences. Coach Franco Foda must manage the match without captain Amir Rrahmani from SSC Napoli, who is out with a high-grade muscle injury. Midfielders Leon Avdullahu and Muharrem Jašari will also be missing. On the other hand, winger Edon Žegrova from Juventus Turin and striker Fisnik Asllani from Hoffenheim are available.

First Ever Meeting

A noteworthy detail is that this is the first ever meeting between Slovakia and Kosovo. Both teams presented a rather defensive style in qualifying — each scored only six goals. However, Slovakia has a strong home record and has not conceded a goal in their last four matches at Tehelné pole. The match is also completely sold out, which should create an electrifying atmosphere.

Analysts expect a cautious match with few goals. Both teams have disrupted defenses due to absences and will probably play tactically responsibly in a match where everything is at stake in a single game.

Road to the Championship: What's at Stake

The winner of Thursday's match will advance to the playoff final on March 31, where they will face the winner of the match between Turkey and Romania. The potential final would also be played on home soil in Bratislava, which is a clear advantage for the Slovaks. The reward for a successful playoff? A place in Group D at the 2026 World Cup alongside the USA, Paraguay, and Australia.

For Slovakia, participation in the World Cup would mean only their second appearance at this tournament in history. Thursday's playoff is the first step on this road — and the entire Tehelné pole stadium will be behind Calzona's charges.
