Cultural Explosion: Emin, Bruno Mars, and Elvis

Tate Modern Opens Emin's Landmark Retrospective

London's Tate Modern launched one of the most anticipated exhibitions of 2026 on Friday, February 27, as Tracey Emin: A Second Life officially opened to the public. Spanning over 90 works created across four decades, it is the largest survey of the British artist's career ever mounted — encompassing painting, video, textile, neon, sculpture, and installation.

From her Turner Prize-nominated My Bed (1998) to blazing neon texts and bronze sculptures shown publicly for the first time, the retrospective is a raw, intimate portrait of Emin's turbulent life and uncompromising artistic vision. Curated by Maria Balshaw, Alvin Li, and Jess Baxter in close collaboration with the artist, the show traces a journey from her early confessional work of the 1990s to recent paintings that, in the curators' words, carry a "transcendent, spiritual quality." Emin's deep bond with Margate — the Kent seaside town where she grew up, lost her mother in 2016, and recovered from bladder cancer in 2020 — threads throughout.

"I've done more in my last five years than in the whole rest of my life," Emin told The Art Newspaper ahead of the opening. Tate marked the occasion with a special after-hours event on opening night, drawing crowds through August 31.

Bruno Mars Ends a Nearly Decade-Long Solo Silence

Friday also brought The Romantic, Bruno Mars's first solo studio album since 24K Magic in 2016. Released by Atlantic Records, the 9-track record is a lovingly crafted blend of cha-cha rhythms, bossa nova, funk, and new jack swing, co-written with long-time collaborators Brody Brown, Philip Lawrence, James Fauntleroy, and D'Mile. The lead single, "I Just Might," had already debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 2026 — his first solo chart-topper in years. A second single, "Risk It All," arrived simultaneously with the album. A 71-show Romantic Tour across North America and Europe is scheduled for April through October 2026.

The Busiest Music Friday of 2026

The record industry packed the same release date with a remarkable cluster of major projects. BLACKPINK launched their third Korean EP, Deadline — their first group release since 2022's Born Pink — showcasing five new tracks via YG Entertainment. Indie songwriter Mitski released her eighth studio album, Nothing's About to Happen to Me, via Dead Oceans, the follow-up to her widely praised 2023 record. Gorillaz also joined the wave with new music as part of their 25th anniversary campaign. The Official Charts called it one of the biggest New Music Fridays of the year.

Elvis Returns in IMAX — and Beyond

Baz Luhrmann's EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, which had been playing exclusively in IMAX since February 20, expanded to conventional theaters worldwide on Friday. Drawing on never-before-seen footage from Elvis's 1970 Las Vegas residency and his 1972 US tour — plus a newly discovered 45-minute audio recording of Presley telling his own story — the film earned a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised Luhrmann for "resurrecting Elvis at the peak of his showmanship." The global box office had already crossed $5.8 million before wide release.

Streaming: Paris Thriller Hits Prime Video

For those staying home, Vanished became fully available on Prime Video globally on Friday, giving international audiences binge access to all four episodes of the MGM+ mystery miniseries. Starring Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin, the show follows a woman whose boyfriend mysteriously disappears aboard a train through France. It had already debuted at number one on streaming charts in the US, where it aired weekly throughout February.

A Rare Cultural Convergence

The sheer density of significant launches on a single Friday — gallery, studio album, concert film, streaming event — reflects the intensifying competition for global cultural attention. February 27, 2026 offered something genuinely rare: a weekend where major art, music, film, and television all collided at once.
