Schrub Wins World Bronze in 3,000m at Toruń
Yann Schrub secured the bronze medal in the 3,000 meters at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, earning France's first medal of the competition and capping off an exceptional winter season.
A Medal for His 30th Birthday
Yann Schrub gave himself the best birthday present. The day after turning 30, the French runner won the bronze medal in the 3,000 meters at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, on Friday, March 21, with a time of 7 min 35 s 71. This is his first ever world medal.
Great Britain's Josh Kerr took gold in 7 min 35 s 56 — the second-fastest time in World Indoor Championships history — while Olympic 1,500m champion Cole Hocker of the United States won silver in 7 min 35 s 70. Only one-hundredth of a second separated Hocker from Schrub at the finish.
A Masterful Tactical Race
Entering the final as the top qualifier, Schrub demonstrated tactical intelligence. Positioned in fifth place for much of the race, he launched his acceleration 400 meters from the finish, moving to the outside to overtake his opponents. This strategic choice cost him a few extra meters against short middle-distance specialists, but allowed him to snatch the bronze.
The Frenchman even thought for a moment that he had won silver before discovering his actual ranking. A surprise that did not diminish his joy in any way.
A Winter of Records
This medal crowns an exceptional winter season for the sports doctor from Moselle. On February 8, Schrub set the French record in the indoor 3,000m in 7 min 29 s 32. Two weeks later, on February 22, he shattered the European record in the 10km road race in 26 min 43 s.
« Three races: a French record, a European record, a world medal »
Schrub summarized jubilantly, according to Sud Radio. A record that few European athletes can boast in a single winter.
An Atypical Path
Schrub had not planned to participate in these World Championships. « Twenty days ago, I didn't even want to come, I was really focused on my road season », he confessed. It was after his European record in the 10km that he decided to try his luck in Toruń, believing he had « everything to gain ».
European cross-country champion in 2023 and European vice-champion in the 10,000m in 2024, Schrub confirms his remarkable versatility, capable of shining from the 1,500m (personal best: 3 min 31 s 42) to the 10km.
Eyes on the 5km World Record
The Frenchman does not intend to stop there. He is now aiming for the 5km world record (12 min 49 s) at the Lille meeting on April 4. An ambition befitting an athlete who is establishing himself as one of the best European long-distance runners of his generation.
These World Indoor Championships, which brought together 674 athletes from 118 federations from March 20 to 22, were also marked by the fourth consecutive title of Sweden's Mondo Duplantis in the pole vault. Schrub's medal will nevertheless remain the highlight of the competition for the French team.
