Slovakia vs. USA: Hockey Semifinal at the 2026 Winter Olympics

The Day All of Slovakia Has Been Waiting For

Friday, February 20, 2026, could be a golden day in the history of Slovak hockey. The Slovak national team plays in the semifinal of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan tonight at 9:10 PM, facing the favored United States of America. This is one of the biggest games ever for Slovak hockey – a place in the final would surpass the historic bronze medal from Beijing 2022 and open the door to the dream of Olympic gold.

Slovakia Dominates the Tournament

The Slovaks arrived in Milan with a strong roster and convincing form. They took first place in Group B in the preliminary round, earning a direct spot in the quarterfinals. There, on Wednesday, February 18, they crushed the German team with a score of 6-2 – and the dominance was absolute: in the first period, they outshot their opponents 18-5. Pavol Regenda shone with two goals and an assist, while Dalibor Dvorský also contributed with a goal and an assist, as did Oliver Okuliar. Goaltender Samuel Hlavaj stopped 25 shots. It was Slovakia's first victory over Germany in Olympic hockey with NHL players.

The dominant figure on the Slovak team is Juraj Slafkovský. The Montreal Canadiens winger has collected seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) in four games and is the team's leading scorer. He has grown significantly since Beijing 2022, where he was named MVP of the Olympics and later became the number one pick in the NHL draft. He had a scare in the quarterfinal against Germany – he remained on the ice for a moment after hitting the boards, but eventually returned to the game. The Slovaks are the only team in the semifinals that has not had to play overtime in the entire tournament.

American Machine Full of NHL Stars

The United States is the clear favorite. Bookmakers at Tipsport are offering odds of 1.33 for an American victory, while a Slovak triumph would bring a coefficient of 6.82. The USA advanced to the semifinals dramatically: they defeated Sweden 2-1 in overtime, with defenseman Quinn Hughes, who has six points in the tournament, scoring the decisive goal. Captain Auston Matthews leads the team with six points and three goals, while Matthew Tkachuk has added five points. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is in great form – he has only allowed three goals in three games played.

History Favors Slovakia

The Slovaks and Americans last met on Olympic ice in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing – and the Slovaks won: 3-2 in a shootout. That triumph opened the door to a historic bronze medal, when Slovakia defeated Sweden 4-0 in the bronze medal game. The confidence and Olympic experience that the team gained in Beijing could be valuable assets in today's match against the on-paper favorite.

Beyond History

The bronze from Beijing was the pinnacle of Slovak hockey at the Olympic Games so far. Today's semifinal is an opportunity to go even further. Coach Vladimír Országh leads a team with excellent collective cohesion, discipline, and hockey IQ – qualities that have repeatedly overcome opponents who are stronger on paper. Slafkovský and Co. take to the ice knowing that they can make history. A place in the Olympic final would be a historic milestone for Slovak hockey.
