Sakamoto Departs as a Legend

Japan's Kaori Sakamoto bid farewell to her competitive career in the most beautiful way possible on Friday, March 27th — with her fourth World Championship title. The 25-year-old Olympic silver medalist from Milan delivered an emotional free skate to Edith Piaf's "Je ne regrette rien" in Prague's O2 Arena, achieving personal bests: 158.97 points for the free skate and a total of 238.28 points.

Sakamoto became the first woman since Michelle Kwan to win four world titles. Her farewell moved not only her fellow competitors but the entire arena. Her compatriot Mone Chiba won silver, and surprisingly, Belgium's Nina Pinzarrone won bronze, her first career medal from the World Championships.

Malinin's Redemption After Olympic Disappointment

American "Quad God" Ilia Malinin confirmed his dominance on Saturday with his third consecutive world title. With a total score of 329.40 points, he defeated the competition by a margin of nearly 23 points. Japan's Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato took the silver and bronze positions.

For Malinin, this was an important redemption after the disappointment of the Milan Olympics, where he finished eighth. In Prague, he showed why he is considered the best figure skater of today, achieving a score of 111 points in his short program.

Germans End Eight-Year Wait, Cizeron Continues Dominance

In the pairs competition, Germans Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin celebrated gold, ending Germany's eight-year wait for a world title in this category. The French duo Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron dominated the ice dance competition with a score of 230.81 points. For Cizeron, this was his sixth world title, and the duo completed a unique season with Olympic, European, and World gold — only the fourth pair in history to achieve this.

Czech Representatives Before Their Home Crowd

For the Czech figure skaters, the championship was an opportunity to showcase their skills on home ice. Georgij Reštenko finished 20th in the men's competition, despite having to recover from a fall on his quad toe loop. The pairs team of Anna Valesiová and Martin Bidař improved by five places to finish in 15th position.

In ice dance, the 2023 junior world champions Kateřina and Daniel Mrázek achieved 11th place with a season's best of 190.17 points. A worse fate befell Natálie and Filip Taschler, whose performance was affected by Natálie's food poisoning the day before the competition — they finished eighteenth with 173.93 points.

Prague as a Model Host

The World Championships in Prague's O2 Arena, which was attended by 200 competitors from 50 countries, proved that the Czech Republic can host major international sporting events at a high level. The championship attracted thousands of fans from all over the world and offered unforgettable sporting moments — from Sakamoto's emotional farewell to Malinin's dominant redemption.
