Handling Strikes at El Prat Airport: Baggage Chaos and Delays
Indefinite strikes by Groundforce at Barcelona-El Prat Airport are causing thousands of unhandled bags, delays of up to 70 minutes, and long queues, right in the middle of the Easter high season.
Indefinite Strikes Shake Catalonia's Main Airport
Barcelona-El Prat Airport is experiencing an operational crisis unprecedented in recent times. Since March 30, workers at Groundforce—one of the main ground handling companies—have been holding an indefinite strike every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, in three time slots that coincide with peak traffic: from 5:00 to 7:00, from 11:00 to 17:00, and from 22:00 to 00:00.
The protest, called by the unions UGT, Comisiones Obreras, and USO, affects 12 Spanish airports, but its impact is especially visible at El Prat, where the confluence of international flights and the Easter tourist flow have amplified the chaos.
Thousands of Abandoned Bags and Widespread Delays
Easter Monday, April 6, was one of the most critical days. According to Catalunya Press, more than 2,000 bags were left unhandled in Terminal 1, while passengers endured endless queues at check-in counters. Delays ranged from 40 to 70 minutes, affecting airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways.
Since the first day of the strike, unions have reported that more than 40 flights took off without the checked baggage of their passengers, a situation that the union organizations described as "total chaos." Cargo services, aircraft assistance, and flight preparation were severely diminished.
The Workers' Demands
The unions are demanding compliance with the collective agreement, the recovery of the purchasing power of wages, and effective negotiation mechanisms. UGT denounced a "total breakdown of labor relations" with Groundforce management and described the minimum services imposed by the company as "abusive."
Josep Ramírez, head of the aviation sector at UGT, pointed out that the company transferred the distribution of minimum services to the Labor Inspectorate but has not initiated any formal mediation process.
Menzies Calls Off Strike, but Tension Persists
Amid this panorama, a piece of positive news: the planned strike by Menzies, another handling company that operates at El Prat and serves Emirates, British Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Norwegian, was called off on March 31 after reaching an agreement on the economic guarantees of the subrogated workers.
However, the Groundforce strike continues without an end date. With the summer tourist season just around the corner, the Spanish aviation sector faces serious doubts about the operational capacity of its main airports.
What Can Passengers Do?
Authorities recommend travelers:
- Arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare
- Travel with hand luggage whenever possible
- Check the status of their flight before traveling
Passengers affected by cancellations are entitled to a full refund or flight change, as well as meals and accommodation where appropriate. Compensation can reach between 125 and 600 euros according to European regulations.
