Slovakia vs. Finland: Battle for Olympic Bronze
After a 6-2 semi-final loss to the USA, the Slovakian hockey team will face Finland on Saturday at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan for the bronze medal — a team they already defeated in the group stage.
The Slovakian national hockey team's dream of reaching the final has been dashed, but a bronze medal is still within reach. After a 6-2 semi-final defeat to the USA, Slovakia will face Finland – the same team they beat in the group stage – on Saturday, February 21st, at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, for the third-place playoff.
Semi-final Loss Doesn't Diminish Ambitions
Friday, February 20th, did not bring Slovakia the desired final berth. The American team won 6-2 and advanced to the final, where they will meet Canada. The game was decided in the first two periods – the USA led 5-0, with goals from Dylan Larkin, Tage Thompson, two from Jack Hughes, and Jason Eichel and Brady Tkachuk. Juraj Slafkovský scored for Slovakia in the 45th minute and Pavol Regenda in the 54th minute.
"We didn't catch the start of the game, we had bad shifts. Tomorrow is still a big game for us," admitted Slafkovský, the team's most productive player in the tournament with eight points before the semi-final. Martin Fehérvary added: "We played hockey that we hadn't played throughout the entire tournament."
Journey Among the World's Elite
Despite the semi-final loss, Slovakia managed the tournament exceptionally well. In the group stage, they defeated Finland 4-1 – Slafkovský scored two goals, and Dalibor Dvorský and Adam Ružička also scored. Goaltender Samuel Hlavaj delivered consistent performances and made 25 saves in the quarter-final against Germany.
The quarter-final duel with Germany ended 6-2. Pavol Regenda recorded two goals and an assist, and Dvorský and Oliver Okuliar also contributed. Slovakia had seven NHL players on the roster and showed that they belong among the hockey elite. "The team matters, and we proved that – every single player worked hard from the first to the last minute," emphasized Regenda.
Finland – a Difficult but Beatable Opponent
Historically, the Finns have been a tough opponent for Slovakia. In 2010 in Vancouver, Slovakia lost the bronze medal game to Finland 3-5. At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, they lost to Finland 0-2 in the semi-finals, but still won bronze after a 4-0 victory over Sweden. The historical record favors the Scandinavians, but this tournament looks different.
In the semi-final in Milan, Finland suffered a painful blow – Canada overturned a 2-0 lead, with Nathan MacKinnon scoring the winning goal on the power play 35 seconds before the end. "It's not a good feeling right now. But we still have a big game tomorrow," said Finnish forward Kaapo Kakko.
Historical Opportunity for Slovak Hockey
Defending the Olympic bronze from Beijing 2022 would have enormous symbolic significance for Slovak hockey. Coach Vladimír Országh, who took over the national team after long-time coach Craig Ramsay, would lead Slovakia to a medal in his Olympic debut. In Milan, the Slovaks proved that they are among the four best teams in the world.
Slafkovský is convinced that the team will quickly deal with the loss: "It will be a completely different game than the first one in the tournament." The bronze medal duel starts today at 20:40 Central European Time. Slovakia has a chance to confirm that it continues to belong to the permanent world hockey elite.
